Wake Me Up When September Ends

No, not really.  I actually really love September and October, although  I  am still in a bit of denial that summer is over.  I am thankful, though, that in a moment of genius, the university where I work decided to give us Monday and Tuesday off for Labor Day, so I don’t have to teach until tomorrow.  Thank you university calendar makers.  After a weekend away, a day to put my house back together,  put myself back together, and get ready for the week is much appreciated.

As promised, I’m back to tell you about our trip to Put-in-Bay.  For those of you not familiar, PIB is a little town on South Bass Island, in Lake Erie.  This weekend and week are the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie, so shit was crazy there this weekend.  Tons of people, tons of events, tons of “don’t give up the ship” flags.  We ate a lot of food, drank a lot of drinks, and generally had a good time.  Since I suck at pictures, the ones I took are pretty random.  Maybe some day I’ll get my shit together with pictures.

FerryWe took our car over, so we had to take the car ferry (duh).  They basically pack cars on there, bumper to bumper.  Riding in your car while riding on a boat is a little weird though.

DTOn Saturday we headed downtown to watch football.  In our group of 15, we had a bunch of Ohio State fans and a bunch of Penn State fans.  There was a band at one of the bars (watching football while listening to a cover band was odd) and these two were falling all over themselves to get the band’s attention.  Dancing with each other, hanging on each other, this picture looks like they are about to make out, but they didn’t.  This all occurred around 4 p.m.  Save that shit for when it is dark out, good god.  I also had a watermelon wheat beer, which was amazing.

Sunday was a little more downtown walking around and a trip to the winery.   The winery is basically a giant backyard where people get shitfaced.  They sell bottles of wine and you get little juice glasses to drink it, and they also sell meat and cheese plates (packages of crackers, some cheese slices and some random pepperoni, all on a styrofoam plate.  Pure class.)  We also met up with this group, who had several shot skis with them.  Quite possibly the best moment of the weekend was the group who did the shot ski while wearing their period costumes from the reenactment of the Battle of Lake Erie.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

On Sunday night they had some pretty fantastic fireworks.  I am kind of eh about fireworks…if you’ve seen them once, you’ve seen them all, but these were pretty decent.  They set them off from barge right off of the downtown, so they were super low and close.  I approved, but I won’t force any fireworks pictures on you.  It was a great weekend, but holy shit am I looking forward to not going anywhere the next few weekends.

I’ll leave you with this picture of John on a cannon.  Because, why not?
